When I created the blog, I called it "the perpetual virtual symposium" rather than "the monthly virtual book club" specifically because I hoped discussions like this would happen.

As for comments/in-line discussion debate, I have a preference for inline discussion, just because it results in fewer click-throughs and more obvious flow. I usually will use the "comments" section for short concurrences and objections, but I feel more substantive discussion should occur in new posts. The problem with inline discussion is that if multiple discussions occur similtaneously they get interleaved, but I think that is best taken care of with conscientious tagging of posts.
